Summer 2025 Workshop – The OAI Path to AI-Driven 6G
Speaker: Jimmy Ahlberg, Director of Open Source Policy – Ericsson
Talk: “The OAI Public License, a Business-Friendly License Designed for 6G and Beyond”
At our recent OpenAirInterface Workshop, we had the pleasure of listening to Jimmy Ahlberg, OAI board member and Director of Open Source at Ericsson, speak on a topic of great importance to open source communities in wireless cellular networks: OAI Public License and why it is a business-friendly license in this industry
Unlike conventional open source licenses, the OAI Public License is purpose-built for the telecom and standardization-driven environment. It aims to enable companies to collaborate on non-differentiating software while maintaining compatibility with standards and protecting their commercial assets
In this talk, Jimmy lays out:
✔ Why traditional licenses like GPL or Apache may fall short in telecom
✔ How the OAI license promotes predictability and adoption
✔ The unique modification and contribution model tailored for interoperability
✔ Why a business-friendly license is essential for innovation in 5G, 6G, and beyond
This license plays a key role in supporting trusted collaboration between academia and industry, and in building a solid legal foundation for next-generation RAN software.
We recommend that all open source stakeholders and interested parties listen to this presentation to learn about the issues at play.
