ISAC Experimentation with OpenAirInterface

OAI Webinar Series Chapter 17

Abstract: Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is emerging as a key capability for 6G, enabling the joint use of radio spectrum and network infrastructure for both environmental sensing and data transmission. At the standardization level, initial ISAC study items were introduced in 3GPP Release 19 and will continue through Releases 20 and 21, paving the way for 6G deployments around 2030.
However, the research community does not need to wait for full 6G standardization to begin experimenting with ISAC. OpenAirInterface, through its open-source gNB and UE stacks, provides access to 5G reference signals that can already be used for ISAC experimentation using today’s 5G waveforms.
In this webinar, we will demonstrate how these signals can be extracted from OAI to observe real-time radio channel variations, enabling AI-driven ISAC applications such as human movement recognition and intrusion detection.

Agenda:

1) ISAC motivation, use cases, and applications
2) 6G ISAC standardisation in ETSI and 3GPP
3) 3GPP 5G NR reference signals applicable to ISAC
4) Extracting 5G reference signals for ISAC from the OAI 5G stack
5) Live demo: ISAC intrusion detection application
6) Q&A session

Paulo Marques

Paulo Marques founded Allbesmart Lda in 2015, the company behind the OAIBOX 5G/6G test platform. He holds a PhD and is a Professor of Wireless Communications at the Polytechnic University of Castelo Branco in Portugal.

Tiago Alves

Tiago Alves is the Chief Software Architect at Allbesmart. He leads the development of the OAIBOX product line as the top fully open source platform to enable 5G/6G test network deployment for research and education based on OpenAirInterface.

Luís Pereira

Luís Pereira is a recognized expert in OpenAirInterface. He is Chief of 5G/6G R&D at Allbesmart Lda. Luis leads the first team in the world to demonstrate a stable 5G SA connection that can reach 800 Mbps with an end-to-end OAI stack.

Ibrahim Hemadeh

Dr. Ibrahim Hemadeh is a Senior Staff Engineer at InterDigital’s Wireless Lab Europe in the UK. In 2017, he obtained his PhD from the University of Southampton (UK) and joined the Future Wireless group at the same university as a postdoctoral researcher. He then joined the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) at the University of Surrey as a Research Fellow. Since 2020, Dr. Hemadeh has been with InterDigital Europe in the UK, where he has been actively contributing to wireless research and innovation activities, focusing on physical layer design for 5G New Radio, 5G-Advanced, and now 6G. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and holds more than 55 patent applications in the field.
