This 2019 edition of the Mobile World Congress saw Facebook Connectivity announce the Magma platform which is an open-source software platform that gives network operators an open, flexible and extendable mobile core network solution. Magma enables better connectivity by:
- Allowing operators to offer cellular service without vendor lock-in with a modern, open source core network
- Enabling operators to manage their networks more efficiently with more automation, less downtime, better predictability, and more agility to add new services and applications
- Enabling federation between existing MNOs and new infrastructure providers for expanding rural infrastructure
- Allowing operators who are constrained with licensed spectrum to add capacity and reach by using Wi-Fi and CBRS
The Magma project Wiki and code is available under the following GITHUB repository.
Magma is an open-source software platform that allows operators to easily deploy mobile networks in hard-to-reach areas. Features include a software-centric distributed mobile packet core, advanced network automation and management tools, and ability to federate with existing LTE networks.
We at the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance, conforming with our vision of Faciliating OpenAirInterface Adoption to benefit the community, are excited that the OpenAirInterface community work on 4G core network has found its use in a solution that will provide connectivity in rural and under-connected areas of the planet. This is indeed a great recognition of the work the community does in its day to day efforts. The OSA team remains committed to helping the OAI developer community and users in enhancing the feature-set of the OAI software offering as well as improving the quality of the code.
