Abstract: The Aerial Research Cloud integrates the OpenAirInterface Layer 2 with the NVIDIA Layer 1 inline acceleration powered by NVIDIA GPUs and NICs. It uses the FAPI interface northbound to communicate with the OAI Layer 2 and the O-RAN 7.2 interface southbound to interact with commercial O-RUs.

In this talk, we will first introduce the Aerial platform’s capabilities and purposes, followed by a detailed description of the integration with the OAI stack. Further, we will show how to use the FAPI standard to achieve interoperability. Lastly, we will demonstrate step by step how to set up the system and how to achieve a successful end-to-end connection.

Florian Kaltenberger is an Associate Professor in the Communication Systems department at EURECOM (France) and the general secretary of the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance. He received his Diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) and his Ph.D. both in Technical Mathematics from the Vienna University of Technology in 2002 and 2007 respectively.

Florian is coordinating the developments of the OAI radio access network project group, which delivered support for 5G non-standalone access in 2020 and for 5G standalone access in 2021. He also manages several research projects (industrial and academic) around Eurecom’s 5G platform and teaches courses on radio engineering and software-defined radio. His research interests include 5G and beyond systems at large, software-defined radio, open source software, massive and distributed multi-antenna systems, localization and positioning, as well as non-terrestrial networks. He authored or co-authored 20 journal papers and more than 100 conference papers, as well as 6 patents in the area of 5G. He is on the editorial board of the Elsevier Computer Networks journal.

Rúben graduated in 2017 with a Software Engineering degree from IPCB in Portugal. He is currently working at AllbeSmart. For the last year, he has been working for OAI, and he is mainly involved in the integration of the OAI 5G Stack with NVIDIAs’ Aerial L1 Platform.
